We’re now into December which means the music in the malls is on perpetually looped holiday jazz standards and everything’s being draped in the ole red, white, and green (and if we’re really lucky, silver and gold, too). For some of us, there’s no better time of year!

When we started The Self-Care Experiment we wanted to give all of us the opportunity to see what could happen if we truly prioritized self-care. Not just the physical stuff and certainly not the quick-fix spa day or mini-break types (although sign us up because nobody’s saying no to that!), but the more every day, routine kinds of things that we thought might have an impact on our day-to-day lives. We couldn’t agree more that the benefits of meditating are boundless for the mind and spirit. But, the level of practice and discipline that meditation requires to quiet that ‘monkey mind’ can be daunting. It’s not like we haven’t tried. As kids we were naturally drawn to it – albeit unknowingly – and created made up guided visualizations that we would solemnly lead each other through before bedtime at overnight camp (remember listening to your cabin-mate as they led the rest of the kids through relaxing each body part from toes to head? You know what they say: if you’re going to talk to yourself, make sure you say something nice. We admit, it’s not something we’re consistently good at. We find it easier to congratulate ourselves and confirm our greatness when something goes well. But we then forget to continue this positive self-talk when things aren’t going well. When we feel down, challenged, or unworthy, we find it hard to believe what we’re saying to ourselves. At Handled, we run around a lot during an average day. Probably more than most people – that’s just part of the job! Easily clocking an average of 10,000 steps a day sounds pretty impressive and while walking is great exercise, it doesn’t do a whole lot to take care of excess stress. Plus, since it’s the only kind of exercise we’ve been doing for the past few months, we’ve been feeling less tight and toned than we’re comfortable with – especially as Spring comes around.
Most sources suggest that about three hours of vigorous activity is sufficient on a weekly basis, and honestly that seems just about the maximum any busy person could fit into their schedule. But we’re all about getting the most out of this Self-Care Experiment so we thought: what would happen if we did an hour a day – every day – instead? That way we could try seven different types of workouts and see how well each of them served our Self-Care purposes. Sound crazy? Crazy like a fox! So that’s what we did.
