The first Monday in May is, and will forever be, Met Gala day (aka fashion’s Oscars) to the fashionable and fashion-obsessed. Year on year, the Gala awes and inspires as we watch fashion, music, film and business elite play the ultimate game of over-the-top dress up, always to a particular theme that sets the tone for the Costume Institute’s headline exhibition (and serves as the Institute’s major source of fundraising).
Last night was no exception. The 2018 Met Gala Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination reigned over the city of New York (not to mention our TV, mobile phone & computer screens), and if we are being honest, it may have been one of the best ever. Hosted by the ultimate fashion dream team – Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace – the Gala showcased the Catholic Church’s influence throughout the history of fashion. Just the theme itself promised visions of grandeur and unapologetic in-your-face opulence, and we were not disappointed. Robes reminiscent of 18th century Rococo; Middle Ages chainmail, hairnets and halos; Renaissance velvet, pearls, gold and jewels (oh my!); and romantic ruching and pleating.
