Spring is here (really, we promise it is) and with it comes renewal and a chance for all of us to let the colour into our every day again, try something new, and just blow all those winter blahs away.
Here at Handled we’re having our own version of a Spring renewal, and that ever so sassy & fresh breath of air you’re feeling is our new Handler- RAQUEL! She’s a girl who appreciates a good Zara + Missoni pairing, and is all about food, fashion, travel & dogs. We’re oh so lucky to have her join the fam, and know you’ll love her too.
Q: How long have you been a stylist, and how did you get into it?
A: I’ve been a stylist for about 10 years. I got my start styling a couple of fashion shows in university, but it wasn’t until I finished my time at FIDM that I really took it on as a career. I genuinely just fell into it and fell in love with it. My friends were asking for styling help in their day-to-day, and the rest, as you say, is history.
Q: What drew you to fashion? What do you love about it?
A: Fashion is something that’s just always been a part of my life. My mother has impeccable style, and just growing up and watching her I always knew I would end up in the industry. I love that at any moment and on any day, how you dress can express your mood, or your story. There are no rules, but there are boundaries, and I love the complexities of all of it combined.
Q: You’re on a desert island – what five things would you want with you?
A: Bathing suit, head turban (Missoni Mare), a giant beach towel, sunscreen, great shades, and a killer beach dress that can also transform to a killer formal dress. That’s six, can I sneak six? And maybe a book, depends who is with me. That is 7, sorry.
Q: What is one outfit piece from your past that you’ve always regretted wearing or purchasing?
A: I regret nothing. What is the point?
Q: Who is your favourite designer right now? Or of all time?
A: Of all time, I will have to go with Elie Saab- timeless, romantic, beautiful, confident, sparkly and sexy. Right now, it is absolutely a toss up between Missoni and Zimmerman. I love how they play with knits and patterns, they push the limit so beautifully, and they are so vastly different.
Q: What are five wardrobe essentials every woman should have?
A: Great fitting jeans, a great day-to-evening shirt / blouse, a great dress. A good pair of shoes that can also go from day to night is essential- if you are a heels girl, go for it. If you like your flats, make sure they have a little something something (my go-to is Giuseppe Zanotti). Oh, and a clean white tee.
Q: And what about the guys? What essentials does a man need in their wardrobe?
A: White, black and grey t-shirt (this is one, not 3!), properly fitting jeans, a black or navy suit, nice dress shoes, and a great pair of cool sneakers. I will also have to throw in a leather jacket.
Q: Style vs. Comfort?
A: Both. Why choose, it’s 2018?!
Q: What trend did you hate the most from 2017?
Slogan t-shirts. Unless it’s to go to the gym, please keep those at home.
Q: What trend do you love the most right now?
A: CONFIDENCE!! Keep it up!!
Q: What is your favourite city in the world and why?
A: My favorite city so far would have to be Tel Aviv. It’s both style and comfort, and the perfect mix between city and beach town. It does not matter who you are or what you are, you are welcome.
Q: What is your favourite album?
Meatloaf, Bat Out Of Hell.
Q: If you could dress one celebrity, who would it be?
A: This is so hard! Blake Lively. Or Amy Schumer!
Q: Pick five guests for your fantasy dinner party.
A: Chelsea Handler, John Oliver, Jack Black, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lawrence. I think this would be the Best. Night. Ever.
Q: If you could be dressed by one person, who would it be?
A: Rachel Zoe. She is who she is for a reason.
Q: What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
A: Be true to yourself and how you’re feeling, if you try to be something or someone else, it shows. (Fortunately for me, this was my mother’s advice from the beginning. I listened.)
